How to Select a VLF Thermal CTP Platemaker

What is VLF thermal CTP?

VLF (Very Large Format) thermal CTP platesetters image plates at newspaper and large-commercial sizes — commonly from around 1160 mm up to 1600×1300 mm (roughly 45×36 in to 63×51 in) and beyond. "Thermal" refers to the 830 nm IR imaging laser and thermal (processless or conventionally processed) plates, versus violet (405 nm) platesetters.

Thermal vs violet

Thermal plates are insensitive to ambient visible light, so they handle with ordinary room lighting and deliver high-contrast dots and stable run length — well suited to long, high-quality commercial runs. Violet systems use visible-light-sensitive plates that need more careful handling but can offer very high imaging speed.

For most large commercial and newspaper workflows where consistency and run length matter, thermal is the conservative, widely supported choice. Violet remains attractive where peak throughput is the priority.

  • Thermal: 830 nm, ambient-light safe, high-contrast dots
  • Violet: 405 nm, faster imaging, stricter handling

Key specifications to compare

Start from the plate size your presses actually require, then compare throughput (plates per hour at your chosen resolution), addressable resolution (dots per inch / line), and the imaging-head technology. For newspaper and deadline-driven commercial work, sustained throughput at production resolution matters more than peak brochure numbers.

  • Max plate size / format coverage
  • Throughput (plates/hour) at production resolution
  • Resolution and screening (FM/AM, dots)
  • Plate type support (processless / conventional)

Automation and workflow

VLF plates are large and heavy; manual handling bottlenecks a pressroom fast. Look at inline autoloaders, punch and bender integration, and a clean path from PDF or 1-bit TIFF through the RIP to the plate. The less touching between plate cassette and press, the higher your uptime.

  • Multi-cassette autoloaders
  • Inline punch / bender integration
  • PDF and 1-bit TIFF workflow compatibility

How to match a device to your pressroom

Map the device to your largest press format, your peak plates-per-hour, and your plate supplier. Confirm the prepress workflow (color management, imposition) plugs in cleanly, and measure the floor footprint and utilities — VLF machines are big. McLantis thermal CTP platesetters follow the same precision-optics philosophy as the LDI and CTS lines, giving prepress teams one consistent imaging platform.
